The 10 Best Garden Secateurs (Bypass).

The 10 Best Garden Secateurs (Bypass)

In this list of the 10 best I will be telling you what I believe are the 10 best garden secateurs (bypass variety) that you can buy at the moment, and I will also show you where to buy them from.
Bypass Secateurs differ from the Anvil type Secateurs because they cut like a pair of scissors. The top blades comes down and passes by (Bypass) the bottom blade leaving a clean and precise cut.

If Pruning is what you want to use your Secateurs for, then you definitely want to be using the Bypass type of Secateur rather than the Anvil type.

As you will see, some of the Secateurs listed are pretty expensive, but in my opinion they are well worth the price as a decent pair of Bypass Secateurs are invaluable for gardening. There are also listed some that are a lot more reasonably priced, but still of great quality and capable of doing a superb job in the garden.

1. Okatsune 103 Bypass Secateurs.

Quite simply the best Bypass Secateurs you can buy for your money. These Secateurs are made in Japan and are the number 1 selling brand for gardeners there.

They are made from the highest quality steel, are super sharp and absolutely perfect for all your pruning needs. You get very precise and clean cuts when using these Secateurs. The red and white handles are great, especially if you’re prone to putting them down and forgetting where you left them, as they show up very easily.

Watch the Video below to see the awesome cutting power of these Secateurs and how easy  they will cut through even quite thick branches.

The locking catch for these is located on the bottom of the handles so is not easily thumb operated like a lot of secateurs are. I Think this is a feature on all Japanese Secateurs, but it matters not as these are such fantastic Secateurs to use. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed if you invest in a pair of these.

10. Basilica Botanica Pruning Shears.

The last pair on Secateurs in my Top 10 are these all metal pair.

They are made from hardened aluminium with carbon steel blades which are very sharp. You may think they would be heavy to use being all metal, but surpisingly they’re not. They are a little heavier than some, but still very manageable and comfortable to use, even for extended periods.

They have a strong return spring and a thumb operated locking mechanism and are capable of cutting through pretty thick branches.

I think these Secateurs look very good, but you can’t buy tools on how good they look, and it just happens that as well as looking very good they also perform very good too.

These Secateurs come with a lifetime guarantee too.

    1. Hi,

Number 3 are a great pair of Secateurs. The Bahco PXR-M3.

They are also great when using for extended periods of time and stop you getting aching hands and wrists.

  5. Mine broke this past weekend. I just got a cheap part from Home Depot thinking it didn’t matter. Boy was I wrong! I appreciate the list and I’m not even going to compare, but just go with #1: Okatsune 103 Bypass Secateurs. Thanks for the advice! – JB

    1. Hi JB,
I have done the same thing as you in the past.
Buying cheap tools or replacement parts and then finding out that It’s just a waste of time.
That’s why now I only buy and use quality tools, and in the long run it will save you money.
You may get a cheap tool for a lot less then a decent one, but you will go through a few or a lot of the cheaper ones, as they will keep breaking or not doing the job they’re meant to. If you buy a decent good quality tool then it’ll last you for a very long time, if not a lifetime.
The Okatsune Secateurs are awesome. they’re the pair that I actually use at the moment and I couldn’t be happier with them.
I’m sure you won’t be disappointed with them.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  6. Hey Michael,
I’ve used these tools for decades and didn’t even know that was their name!
Right now I have a Fiskars but I think I’d like to invest in the Felco since it looks like it would be more comfortable for using for an extended period.
Thanks for the great information (and the education!)

    1. Hi Kyle Ann,
These are essential tools for the garden. I use my Secateurs on a daily basis and have them in a holster on my belt so they are always close to hand when I need them.
Fiskars are a great brand as are Felco.
As you have mentioned though, there are some that are better and more comfortable when using for extended periods.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.
