Petrol Lawn Mower With Roller 2018 – My Top 5 Picks.

Petrol Lawn Mower With Roller

In this post I will be writing about My Top 5 Picks of Petrol lawn mower with roller.

Again, as with my post on What Is The Best Self Propelled Lawn Mower 2018 they are not in any particular order as I think all 5 listed lawn mowers are very good and you would be more than happy with any one of them.

Choosing one for your garden will just come down to which one you personally like the look of.

A lawn mower with a roller on is what you need if you want to create the stripey effect on your lawn.

Lawn Stripes

You can have great fun creating different patterns on your lawn using a lawn mower with roller.

You can do the stripes’ length ways, width ways, diagonal or even in a circular pattern.

It’s always good to alternate the direction you cut the grass every now and again anyway as this will not only promote healthier grass, but also it will stop rutting, whereby the ground gets a little uneven from mowing the same way week after week.

If you have a large lawn then I’d definitely recommend buying a petrol mower with a roller, as not only do they leave the nice stripey effect on the lawn, but they also provide an excellent cut.

Also with a rear roller lawn mower you can get the mower right over the edge of the lawn without it slipping off, giving a good cut all the way around the edges of the garden.

All the mowers listed are self-propelled.

To Finish

I hope this post will help you in choosing the right rear roller mower so you can get started trying it out in your garden.

I’m sure once you get one and start making those stripes’ on your lawn then you’ll want to be out there mowing as much as possible.

If you have a medium or large sized garden then my recommendation would be a petrol lawn mower with a rear roller.

They are heavier than the 4-wheeled self-propelled lawn mowers due to the roller, but in my opinion it’s worth it just to see the lovely looking stripes’ on your freshly cut lawn.

If you have any questions or comments on this post then please leave them below.

  1. Hey Michael, thanks for reviewing these various petrol mowers. We’re ready to make the switch from cutting around awkward wires to one that’s absent from electrics. To finalize the lawn cutting with a smart stripey finish will be extra satisfying.
Our garden is small-medium, the extension wire to the front lawn isn’t long enough, therefore, we have to break off to plug into the front room socket & leave the window open which is frustrating.
Occasionally filling a Jerry can whilst refuelling the car won’t present any issues. I’m rather tempted with the Honda 19 Inch. We used to have a Honda car & that ran for years without any issues, hopefully, this will do the same.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Simon.

    1. Hi Simon,
Using a petrol mower is definitely more convenient then having to plug in extension leads and having wires everywhere.
The Honda is a great mower and I’m sure you’d love it for years to come.
You’re right about the Jerry can as well. Most people drive unleaded cars these days, so it’s easy to fill up your Jerry can every once in a while when you’re filling up the car.
I hope if you do choose one of these mowers that you’ll enjoy using it and will be happy with the way it leaves your lawn looking.
      Best wishes,
      Michael

  2. Hi Michael,
This is a great list for petrol lawn mowers. Our old lawn mower from Hayter Harrier needs updating already. I think we will go for Hayter Harrier 48 Autodrive BBC. The blade brake clutch is certainly a good feature to use. We have a really large lawn and hence, we definitely require removing the cut grass from the grass catcher several times, without have to stopping the engine every single time. Thank you for posting this.

    1. Hi Zoey,
The Hayter Harrier is a great choice and the Blade Brake Clutch feature is excellent. I mow several large lawns and have a bbc saves time.
You will also benefit from having a lovely looking stripey lawn.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  3. Hello Michael,
I thought this was a very insightful article about your top 5 petrol lawn mowers and the breakdown of the specs. It was very well organized and has great links to the product page. I would be interested more in why you chose the Masport Rotarola RRSP 22 over the other ones and if that would be your recommended pick as the best? Or does it depend on the person’s body type and the size of the lawn? I’m not an expert in this subject, so I thought it was very helpful. Thanks for posting!

    1. Hi Daniel,
Thank you very much for your comment.
The reason I chose the Masport was because a friend I know purchased it and very quickly decided it wasn’t for him and decided to buy a Cobra lawn mower instead.
Having read a lot about Masport lawn mowers I was quick to Buy it from him. I can say it is a great mower and has never let me down.
It will depend on body size and lawn size a bit. You can see the weight of each mower, so someone who is small in stature would probably struggle with a heavy mower, even if it is self-propelled.
All these mowers are ideally suited for medium to large sized lawns.
Other mowers for smaller lawns I will be reviewing soon.
Thanks for your comment and questions.
      Take care,
      Michael.

  4. Hi Michael! I own a plain electric lawnmower and it does the job. Our lawn is small front house and a bit in the back. However, in the future, I have a plan to move on a larger property with more green and when I’m going to decide which petrol lawn mower to buy I’ll refer back to your article because you have a good information here, especially for someone who doesn’t know much about them. Like me. Thanks for sharing. All the best!

    1. Hi Ivan,
I agree, electric mowers do the job, especially if you only have a small lawn to mow. I will be reviewing some electric mowers in a future post.
Definitely come back to read my posts again when you are in a bigger place with a larger lawn.
I should have plenty more lawn mower reviews published for you to read by then too.
      Best wishes,
      Michael

  5. Hi Michael,
nice site and descriptions about various lawn movers.
We have a terrace and we don’t use it but the post is very informational anyway. It makes easier for someone to decide what kind of lawn mowers to get.

If once in the future I would need one, I will come back to your site for reference, thus, I am going to bookmark it.

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Igor,
Thank you for your nice comment. I do hope my post is informative to you and any other people who read it.
I hope in the future you will have a garden and be in need of a lawn mower. I hope you will find exactly what you need in one of my posts.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

    1. Hi,
Thanks for your comment. It’s always good to have a nice looking lawn and giving the lawn the stripey effect sure does make it look really nice.
      Best wishes,
      Michael

  6. Nice and informative post. I’m not sure I’d fancy emptying a box, with the engine still running but I suppose it adds a bit of excitement to mowing a lawn.

    1. Hi Les,
      Thanks for commenting.
Believe me that it is very safe to empty the grass catcher with the engine running when the lawn mower has the BBC (Blade Brake Clutch) feature.
I love this feature on a lawn mower as it saves time and effort and over time will greatly reduce wear on the pull cord.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  7. Awesome looking and very informative website.
I love my lawns looking good. I think the stripes look great on a lawn.
Have a medium size lawn. Don’t like too heavy a mower.
    I found this very helpful
    Thank you very much.

    Di 🙂

    1. Hi Di,
      Thanks for your kind comment.
I love the stripes on a lawn too, they really do make the lawn look great.
I’m glad you found this helpful and as I’ve listed all the weights of the mowers it will help you choose the right one.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  8. Hi Michael, thank you for sharing reviews of petrol lawn mower. I found it really helpful and you have made me come to decision on the one that I will be getting.

I currently have an electric mower and having to deal with the electric cable is not much fun and having a petrol mower makes sense to me now.

I like the sound of Masport Rotarola RRSP 22 and will be checking this out.

Thank you again for a great review.

    1. Hi Moni,
I’m glad to have helped you to choose a new Lawn Mower.
I understand how you feel with using an electric mower. Having to keep moving the cable around isn’t much fun, especially if you’re mowing quite a large lawn.
I have a Masport Rotarola myself and it’s a brilliant mower. I’m sure you will love it.
Any questions then please feel free to ask me.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  9. My mower is on the fritz and we are actually checking out mowers to buy! I am really fond of the Honda in general, but the fact that you can empty the grass without having to stop and start the motor, amazing!!

We are also needing a edger, which brand would you suggest?

    1. Hi Delanee,
      Thanks for your comment.
Honda makes great cars and great lawn mowers too.
I’m sure you wouldn’t be disappointed with that lawn mower. The Roto-stop feature is good, especially if you have a medium or large garden where you will be emptying the grass catcher a few times.
I have a post on Lawn edging shears. I will leave the link below so you can read it to help you choose which ones you like.

  10. We just moved to our new house with a huge garden, so we really need a lawn mower, but honestly we had no idea which one is really good.. You have really good ones here, so we will check all of them and see which one is the best for us, were kinda lazy, but maybe we will go for the Honda!

    1. Hi Emmanuel,
      Thanks for commenting.
I’m glad to be of help. If you’ve got a big garden then any of these mowers will be great for you.
They will leave a nice stripey effect, which always looks good.
The Honda is a great Lawn mower, It’s one of the ones you can empty without stopping the engine as it has the Roto-stop feature.
Good luck in your new house and with your new mower.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  11. I am in need of a new mower. I have a mower with a 22″ blade. Believe it or not, I need a small blade to get to places between trees. I am thinking a 19″ would do the trick? Also, do all of these also have a mulch blade? I like to mulch my front yard, and bag the back. So it would be nice to be able to go from mulch to cut and back easily.

    1. Hi Leahrae,
Thanks for your comment and question.
If I was you then I would measure the gap between the trees to make sure a 19″ mower will fit. Remember to add a couple of inches on to account for the deck width too.
These don’t have the mulching blades, but if that is what you are after then please check out my other post on self-propelled lawn mowers.
They don’t have the rear roller, but most of them do have mulching blades. I’ll leave the link below.

  12. Hi, thanks for this excellent review of the various Petrol Lawn Mower With Roller that are available. I’ve always wanted to know how to get the stripey look on my lawn now I know. What’s the best way to keep a petrol mower maintained? Is it something that can be done DIY, how do you find someone who can do it for you and what would be the annual cost? I should probably go away and do my own research on this, however, I wondered if you had any guidance on this.

    1. Hi Dom,
Thanks for reading and commenting on my post.
All these Lawn Mowers are great for getting that stripey effect on your lawn.
To keep the mower maintained is pretty easy.
You should always check it’s clean underneath yourself and scrape off any grass from the underneath of the deck.
The best way is to tilt the mower back (you shoud not tilt the mower on it’s side as this can damage the engine) and scrape off any debris. If the grass is dry when cutting then you shouldn’t really have any build up of grass at all.
These mowers can and will cut well in wet and damp conditions, but that is when you’re likely to get grass caught on the underside of the deck that will need cleaning off.
It’s always best to get your lawn mower serviced once a year at an authorised garden machinery company.
If you pay good money for a decent lawn mower like one of these then it’s well worth doing this and it will last a very long time.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  13. Hi Michael,
I don’t know about lawn mowers, I just know about it when I move to the USA. I mow sometimes as my exercise and I really enjoy it plus I burn fats. My husband needs to check your lawn mower recommendation, it seems more easy to use than our old ones.

    1. Hi Amie,
Yes, mowing the lawn can definitely be good exercise and help to burn unwanted fat.
At this time of year and with the summer we’re having at the moment I’m losing lots of body fat.
Please do show your husband my website and I hope he will find it very useful, not only for lawn mowers, but also for other gardening tools.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  14. Those mowers make for one awesome looking yard!
Looks like a golf green !
I have to check one of those out!

    Thanks for the great post!

    Mike

    1. Hi Mike,
Yes, these mowers will make your lawn look awesome.
If you have a medium to large sized lawn then one of these petrol lawn mowers with roller will definitely be of benefit to you.
Remember to alternate the stripes sometimes as this will help promote healthy growing and stop the lawn getting ruts in it.
There are a few other posts I have written on other Lawn Mowers if you haven’t already checked them out.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  15. Michael,
Great review of quality lawn mowers to consider! My wife and I are actually closing on a house here soon so I’m glad I found your site. I literally know nothing about current mowers. If we decide to buy a new mower I’ll definitely have to get one with a roller. I never knew how they got that neat effect with the lines till now! Thanks for this post. I’ll have to recommend my local dad friends!
    Thomas

    1. Hi Thomas,
      Thanks for leaving a comment.
Now you know how to get the stripes on the lawn I bet you’re looking forward to getting into your new place and getting a mower to make the lawn look lovely.
I’m sure any of the 5 Petrol Lawn Mowers with Rollers will suit your needs just fine.
      Thanks for the recommendation.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  16. Michael,
My next door neighbor uses a roller to leave stripes in his lawn. I will look at your suggestions to see what will work for me. I like the idea of being able to empty without turning motor off, sometimes it will be hard to start when restarting. I have a bigger lawn, so a wider cut would be preferred.
    John

    1. Hi John,
      Thanks for your comment.
The lawn mowers with the biggest cutting diameter are the Masport and the Cobra.
Unfortunately the Masport mower you can’t leave running while you empty the grass catcher, but with the Cobra mower you can.
Maybe the Cobra lawn mower would be the best choice for you.
      Best wishes,
      Michael

  17. Hey Michael,
I like to maintain our yard myself and this is a great resource when it’s time to purchase a new lawnmower in the near future. Looking at the features and specs list, I just noticed that the first two needs an annual service. The next 3 did not mention if there is a need. Just like maintaining a car, I believe that all of these needs service but maybe I’m wrong. Can you please enlighten me? Is there such thing as a maintenance free for lawnmowers? Thanks!

    1. Hi Ian,
Thanks for your comment and question.
The answer is yes, all lawn mowers really need to be serviced, preferably every year.
If you want your lawn mower to last and be reliable then I would definitely recommend getting them serviced once a year.
In late Autumn or Winter is best when you won’t be using it to cut grass anymore.
Unfortunately there’s no such thing as a maintenance free lawn mower, YET.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  18. Hi Michael,

    1. Hi Kahlua,
Thanks for reading and commenting on my post: Petrol Lawn Mower With Roller.
I’m glad you enjoyed it and took some good information from it.
Please do refer to it or maybe to one of my other posts on Lawn Mowers when you wish to purchase one.
      Thanks a lot,
      Michael.

  19. I am not using any lawn Mower for a while but I would take the Cobra Lawn Mower because is the one fits with my style in fact of making a good design. I like your whole site you really offer good information when it comes to Garden tools. Thanks for sharing this post.

    1. Hi Daniel,
      Thanks for your kind comment.
I’m glad you like my site and that it’s helpful to you.
The Cobra lawn mower is great and you i’m sure you won’t be disappointed with it and it’s performance.
It does look pretty awesome too.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  20. I’d go for the Honda HRX 476 QXE 19 Inch, but boy are these expensive. Currently I have an older Honda, but we are losing our lawn with a new yard design. Love lawn mowers but mixed emotions I won’t need much of one soon.

    1. Hi Stewart,
Yes, these mowers are expensive, but they’re definitely worth it and will last you for a very long time if maintained and serviced pretty regularly.
The Honda is a superb mower and has a lot of great features.
If you’re losing the lawn to a different garden design then perhaps one of my other posts on different gardening tools will be of help to you.
      Thanks for your comment.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  21. Thanks for the lawn mower tips Michael! We have as small townhouse with three apartments and as the only guy in the house mowing the lawn has become my responsibility, go figure :D. Fortunately our lawn is not that big but I actually love how the freshly cut lawn looks, smells and feels like.

Nothing gives a better impression of a house than a well maintained yard. Our current mower doesn’t have a roller and it’s good exercise pushing the thing around. We will probably buy a house of our own eventually and if we end up with a bigger lawn I have to check out one of these roller equipped ones. I’ll bookmark your site for future reference!

    1. Hi Jukka,
      Thanks for your comment.
I’m glad you’re getting a good workout using your push mower to mow the lawn. Being the only guy in the house, i’m sure you don’t really mind the responsibility.
I love how a freshly mowed lawn looks, smells and feels too and these mower will make the lawn look, smell and feel great.
I think it does make a massive impression when the garden of a house is well maintained.
When you do get a house of your own then I hope this and other posts of mine will come in handy to you.
      Best wishes,
      Michael.

  22. I really needed this article I have been searching for a petrol mower with rear roller and there is all the info I need here.

I have had an ongoing issue with mowers mainly because I have a large garden and have been to tight to shell out for a suitable mower! Anyway lesson learnt now, I had looked at a couple on your list already so it’s reassuring to know I was looking at the right products this time!

Thanks for the site it saves me anymore gardening headaches!

    1. Hi Andy,
      Thanks for the comment.
It’s always worth paying a bit extra and getting yourself a decent lawn mower as you know it will last and perform well.
In the long run it will always save you money just to bite the bullet and get decent tools.
All these lawn mowers are superb and will do a brilliant job and last a very long time as long as you give them a clean when needed. It’s also advisable to get them serviced every year or two depending on how much you use it.
I hope you will find lots more useful information and help with other gardening tools through my other posts.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  23. There’s nothing better than the smell of fresh cut grass in spring! I don’t know a whole lot about lawnmowers so I never knew there are lawnmowers with rollers to make that effect in the grass! That’s pretty cool. I feel if I bought a lawnmower I’d want to turn it into some sort of business haha. Anyways, thanks for the list Michael, God bless!

    1. Hi Nate,
      Thanks for your comment,
Yes, the lawn mowers with rollers are pretty cool. They’re heavier to use than other mowers, but well worth it to get that stripey effect on the lawn.
I agree the smell of freshly cut grass is lovely, especially in springtime when it gets the first cut.
I did buy a mower (and a few other tools) and turn it into a business, some years ago now, and I’ve never looked back.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.

  24. Nice detailed list. I’ve always had petrol mowers but I recently got a little electric mower, its different and the cord is annoying. Gonna switch back in the future!

    1. Hi Lance,
      Thanks for your comment.
I generally always use petrol lawn mowers, but have to occasionally use an electric one for certain jobs.
The cord can be annoying as you have to extra careful you don’t run over it and you’re forever moving it out the way so you can mow where it is.
I don’t blame you for wanting to switch back.
There is an alternative, which is battery powered lawn mowers. They are really good and even though they are battery powered, they are more then capable of doing the job as good as their petrol counterparts.
I’ll be publishing a post on these very soon, so keep a look out for it.
      Thanks and best wishes,
      Michael.
